We hire and keep good engineers

The median engineer at Sequere has been here four years. That's unusual in consulting, where turnover is often used as a feature rather than addressed as a problem. We pay above market, keep management layers thin, and give engineers direct access to client problems rather than filtering everything through account managers. People stay because the work is interesting and the context isn't stripped out of it.

We tell clients what we actually think

If a project brief has a requirement that will cause problems later, we say so in the discovery call - not in the retrospective. This sometimes means we recommend a smaller scope than the client came in wanting. We've found that clients who want honest feedback keep coming back; clients who only want validation don't tend to create the kinds of projects where the work is interesting anyway.

Engineering is the core discipline

We don't have a layer of account managers between clients and engineers. The person who scopes the project is involved in building it. Senior engineers talk directly to client stakeholders. This creates some coordination challenges at scale, but it eliminates the information loss that makes project handoffs unreliable.

Documentation is a first-class output

Every system we ship includes runbooks, architecture decision records, and onboarding documentation written as if the engineering team that built it will never be available to explain it. Because eventually that will be true. Clients consistently cite documentation quality as a differentiator - which says more about the industry standard than it does about us.
